Important Notice About Referrals

The Vermont Psychological Association (VPA) provides this directory as a resource for locating psychologists and psychotherapists. Inclusion in the directory does not constitute an  endorsement, recommendation, certification, or guarantee by VPA.

VPA verifies licensure when a psychologist joins VPA and when they enroll in our Find-a-Therapist  Service but does not continuously monitor licensure status.  VPA does not independently evaluate or guarantee the quality or effectiveness of services, the fit between a psychologist and client, qualifications for a particular concern, or professional or ethical conduct.

You are responsible for determining whether a psychologist is appropriate for your needs.  We encourage you to confirm current licensure and ask prospective providers about their qualifications, areas of expertise, treatment approach, fees, and other factors important to you.

See our Full Referral Service Disclaimer for more details.

How to Find a Therapist

Finding the right therapist for you can take a little time.  Our platform allows you to first identify the issue for which you are seeking a therapist and then, if needed, narrow your search using location.  Nearly all of our member therapists can work via telehealth, so there’s no need to indicate a location unless you prefer seeing a therapist in person.

1

Tell Us Your Issue

Just click the button on the first page of our referral service site to indicate which issue you are seeking help with.  This will help us match you with the right therapist.

All you have to do then is give us a little bit of information about yourself to pass on to a potential therapist.

2

Chat With a Potential Therapist

Our system will match you with a potential therapist, if there is a VPA member with the particular expertise you need who is also taking new clients.  That therapist will contact you within 3 business days, at which time you can chat with them to see if they would be a good therapist for you to work with.

3

Schedule Your Appointment

If that therapist works, great!  You can schedule an appointment.  If not, your request will be re-routed to another available therapist, who will call you to see if you would be a good match.

Full Find-a-Therapist Service Disclaimer

The Vermont Psychological Association (VPA) provides this referral service as a resource to help individuals locate psychologists who may provide psychological services.  VPA does not recommend, endorse, or guarantee any particular psychologist or psychological service.

VPA verifies that a psychologist is appropriately licensed at the time the psychologist joins VPA and again when the psychologist enrolls in the VPA Referral Service.  VPA does not continuously monitor or independently verify the licensure status of psychologists listed in the Referral Service.  Individuals seeking services are encouraged to independently confirm a psychologist’s current license status with the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation.

Inclusion in the VPA Find-a-Therapist Service does not constitute a certification, accreditation, endorsement, or recommendation by VPA.  VPA makes no representations or warranties regarding the quality, effectiveness, appropriateness, or outcome of psychotherapy or other services provided by any psychologist listed in the Referral Service.  VPA also makes no representations regarding the compatibility or “fit” between a psychologist and a prospective client, the psychologist’s qualifications or experience for a particular concern, availability, fees, or treatment approach.

VPA does not supervise, direct, or control the professional practice of psychologists listed in the Find-a-Therapist Service and does not independently investigate or certify their professional or ethical conduct.  VPA is not responsible for the acts, omissions, professional judgments, or services of any psychologist listed in the Find-a-Therapist Service.

Individuals seeking psychological services are responsible for determining whether a particular psychologist is appropriate for their needs.  Before beginning treatment, individuals may wish to ask about the psychologist’s qualifications, areas of expertise, treatment approach, fees, insurance participation, and current licensure, and should raise any concerns directly with the psychologist or the appropriate regulatory authority.

By using the VPA Find-a-Therapist Service, you acknowledge that VPA’s role is limited to providing a referral resource and that the decision to contact or engage a particular psychologist is solely yours.
